If you see a bulging or moving wall, rapid water entry, or signs of structural distress, stop and get qualified on-site help before going further.

After you observe

A completed list is a starting point for a conversation, not a conclusion. If your notes point to roof or site water — overflowing gutters, downspouts by the wall, grade sloping toward the foundation — those are often the first and most correctable sources. If they point to recurring dampness, a discrete weeping crack, or water at the wall–floor joint, read how interior and exterior approaches differ before choosing anything, and be ready to bring in qualified help for a building-specific assessment. Start with interior methods and their limits or, for older masonry, old stone basement walls.
